Hard Disk Dropout
Posted by Jesco Freund at Oct. 22, 2009 8:17 p.m.
Some days ago, I wrote on a discussion board that my workstation at home was getting a bit long in the tooth and the hard disks weren't the younges ones (actually, they do have over 10,000 power-on hours each). Obviously, I shouldn't have done this – when I tried to boot my computer today, the boot loader just hung up after some seconds filled with a very nasty sound apparently coming from one of the disks. Luckily, a cold reboot did the trick. And guess what – the first thing I did was to make a backup; losing all my data is an all too bad perspective after all…
I still hope the beast will make it until Chhristmas – actually my plan was to wait for the Christmas trade to finish and then decide unhurriedly about architecture and components for my next workstation. Just take this for granted: it will inevitably become a monster computer once again ![]()
